National report on education policy
Beblavý, Miroslav and Kubánová, Martina |
|
This lengthy report attempts to objectively analyze the current state of the educational system in Slovakia and presents a series of options for policy makers to peruse and debate. The standard of a child’s education in Slovakia is something of a lottery and depends on their geographical location, the ability of parents to pay spiraling fees for books and other school expenses, and the race to place a child in a school of higher standards often resorting to bribery to bring this about. Add to this a confusing administrative structure, a declining population of younger people at primary level and a poor standard of attainment at the other end (when compared to their Western equivalents): Add further to this the reducing financial budgets imposed by the Slovakian Government and it is easy to see why urgent reform is required. The authors provide much statistical data to back their findings and in their conclusion, set out the key challenges to Education Policy in Slovakia including paying more attention to the quality of service offered to its students; improving the results to meet the more demanding requirements of industry and commerce; the restructuring of the way it currently works at both the sharp end and how it is administered. |
