An overview of Lithuanian economy

Steponaviciene, Guoda
The paper offers a coherent overview of the state of Lithuanian economy, demonstrating both the accomplishments made by year 2000 and problems that haunt nascent market economy. Having successfully undergone liberalization and stabilization in the 1990s, the Lithuanian economy is a functioning market economy with stable employment and average income indicators. However, slowdown in economic growth indicators reflects the need to complete ongoing reforms. Lack of consensus holds back structural reforms in the energy sector, agriculture, pension and healthcare systems. Inefficient, these sectors put a heavy burden on Lithuanian economy and need to be reformed. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the economic reform program of the incumbent government.
